Pilates is about controlling your own body to get stronger and leaner.
Using only body weight with breathing exercises, the workout focuses on the ‘powerhouse’ (muscles in the hips, back, abdominals and glutes), requiring stabilisation of the torso and sustained concentrated effort to maintain core control.
The benefits of Pilates include improved flexibility, posture and balance, and in comparison to other more traditional and strenuous forms of exercise, significantly reduces the chance of injury.
The practical stuff
You will need to collect a long mat for the class. Classes vary each session; you will likely need to use the pilates balls, rings and blocks that you will find in the studio.
